Our Department

The Portland Area Fire Department, formerly run by the City of Portland, has historically served its neighboring townships. In 2012, the City entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement with Portland and Danby Townships for joint governance of the Department. 

The Department is headquartered in the Emergency Services Building, 773 E Grand River Ave., Portland, MI, along with the Portland Police Department and the Portland Ambulance Service.  This arrangement provides seamless service to the coverage area, along with the Ionia County Sheriff Department and the Michigan State Police covering the Townships. 


The Portland Area Fire Authority maintains their commitment to excellent fire suppression and rescue services throughtout its coverage area, and to its neighboring Townships and jurisdictions through maintaining historic mutual aid agreements. 


Below is an approximate outline of the coverage area. The general coverage area for fire and rescue is all of Portland Township, all of the City of Portland, and roughly the northern 2/3 of Danby Township (generally above the Grand River), and a small part of Sebewa Township.  In all cases of emergancy, please dial 911 firstIonia County Central Dispatch will determine the proper covering department in the most timely manner.
